Dinesh Karthik has stated that India’s loss to Australia in the third Test highlighted a few problems that were evident in recent matches, despite the fact that they won.

India’s winning streak in home Tests came to an end on Friday with a crushing nine-wicket loss to Australia.

The Indore Test demonstrated how the Indian team has had difficulty getting reliable performances from its top-order hitters. Shubman Gill will open the third Test with captain Rohit Sharma after KL Rahul was dropped due to a streak of poor performances, but the issue still exists.

Moreover, Virat Kohli, Cheteshwar Pujara, and Shreyas Iyer have not been able to perform to their usual calibre. The bottom order has frequently saved India, but it failed in Indore, leading to a nine-wicket thumping.

“India’s top seven batters haven’t got the scores “: Dinesh Karthik

Dinesh Karthik believes that while the pitches for the upcoming Border Gavaskar Trophy are difficult to bat on, the Indian squad should have been prepared given what was expected.

“We cannot hide from the fact that India’s top 7 haven’t got the scores that they would like. We are talking about consistent collapses. Is batting difficult on this pit? Most definitely. But as a team, they have chosen to play on these pitches which means they need to back themselves on them,” Dinesh Karthik said.

“They are capable of it, a lot of the players in isolation have probably played on tougher pitches and succeeded but playing international cricket is a different ball game,” said Dinesh Karthik on Cricbuzz.

“When you get out a couple of times there are so many doubts that come, the confidence gets low. And then, to go out there and still back yourself just to play those big shots to get away from pressure can be really hard. I completely empathize with the Indian batters, it is hard work, but that is what Test cricket is.

“It has happened consistently over a period of time and the question will arise, how is it that team India is consistently backing these players but they are not producing the scores that is required,” Dinesh Karthik added.

India will play against Australia in the fourth Test at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, starting on March 9.
